Billy Elliot at Victoria Palace

Billy Elliot Billy Elliot is a fantastic musical set in 1980s Durham in the times of the miners strike. The plot centres around a young lad- Billy Elliot- who is forced to attend boxing classes but whose interest is aroused when he sees the neighbouring ballet class. The ballet teacher, Sandra Wilkinson, sees great potential in Billys ability and encourages him to attend the class. Billy's dad Jackie finds out about this and forbids him to attend any more classes, but Billy disobeys him and once again continues his ballet classes. Sandra Wilkinson arranges an audition for Billy but Billy misses this opportunity due to Billy's brother becoming involved in a miners skirmish. Late on Jackie actually sees first hand for himself how gifted Billy is at ballet and arranges another audition at the Royal Ballet School. At the interview with one of the Ballet School panel, Billy is asked how he feels when he is dancing to which Billy responds "like electricity". As a fantastic finale towards the end of the film we see Billy receiving a letter to tell him he has been accepted for the Ballet School and the film then ends 14 years later with a dramatic and impressive scene with Billy dancing the lead role in Matthew Bournes Swan Lake.

Billy Elliot Reviews

'Billy Elliot is a an utterly original and factual plot based on a boys ambition to better himself. The musical itself is full of passion, drama, humour and the plot really does get a grip on life for Billy during this time. It focuses on real life, feelings and a boy desperately trying to please his father whilst trying to make a life changing decision for himself. The cast list is wonderful and the story line very close to the actual film, and at times totally absorbed the viewer into the world of Billy Elliot. This musical is a smash hit in the West End and will thrill and delight anyone who goes to see it.' - Showtixs Suze
