Sweeney Todd at Adelphi Theatre London

Sweeney Todd London Sweeney Todd is a tale set in 19th century England. It is based around the character Sweeney Todd, who was formerly known as Benjamin Barker and his return to England after spending years in an Australian prison on a false imprisonment charge. On his return he finds out that the judge who sentenced him tore his family apart and he does not know where his wife Lucy or his daughter Johanna is. He seeks lodgings over Mrs Lovetts pie shop and she recognises him from years gone by. She has saved his razors and knives from his former life where he was a barber and suggests he set up trade again above her shop. Todd informs her of his thirst for revenge and she offers to help him. Todd decides to take in the town again and whilst in the town sees Italian barber Pirelli boasting a new hair cure and he enters into a shaving race with him. Todd wins and Pirelli has to pay 5. Pirelli then visits Todd at his shop and recognises him from the past and attempts to blackmail him. Todd kills him and the ever practical Mrs Lovett suggests they use the body for the pie filling for the shop to boost trade. This leads to more murders from Todd, slitting the throat of his victims and hiding the body through a trap door that leads to the pie shop bakery and the bodies are used for the pies. Whilst this is going on, an acquaintance from Todds past, a sailor named Anthony Hope, has found Todds daughter by accident and falls in love with her. Todd encourages Anthony to hide Johanna at the shop, at the same time he is on a mission to lure the Judge who sentenced him to his shop and finish him off for good. The story concludes with a final scene at Todds barber shop and a few twists emerge as the story comes to an end.

Sweeney Todd Reviews

'The story has lots of black humour as well as some touching scenes ,and the songs fit each of the scenes well. Although most of the story involves murder it touches on the light hearted side and shows the desperate times for Mrs Lovett who is prepared to use anything for her pie fillings, and also for Sweeney Todd who feels his life is not worth living without his wife and daughter, therefore taking a very blaze view of murder. Please note that this play is not suitable for children under 12' - Showtixs Suze
